Request a Police Report?

The New Brunswick Police Department Records Bureau has grown in advancement to be virtually a paperless operation. A computer driven records management system offers efficiency relative to quality and accuracy.

The Records Bureau provides copies of Police Reports, Accident Reports, and background checks for current and prior resident of the City of New Brunswick.

Fees:

Walk up/window service, cash only;

$0.05 per letter size page or smaller.

$0.07 per legal size page or larger.

If copies of reports are requested other than in person, an additional fee of $5.00 may be charged to cover the administrative cost of the report.

When requesting a report through the mail, you must inlcude a check or money order payable to; ‘New Brunswick Police Department/Records Bureau.”

Credit Cards are not accepted.

 

How to Request a Police Report

When requesting a police report, you can expect fast results locating the report that you seek by supplying us with accurant information.

Necessary information that we need when you are requesting a Police Report;

1. Exact spelling of your name and date of birth, that you supplied to the Police Officer taking your report.

2. The date and time that the incident occured.

3. The location of the incident.

4. The type of incident (example -car accident, theft, assault)

5. License plates of cars involved in motor vehicle accidents.

It is necessary to provide this accurate information to assist our staff in locating the report that you are requesting.

Guidelines for Available Reports:

  • Our focus is to locate and supply you with the Police Report that you are requesting.
  • However, there may be restrictions/guidelines that may apply to certain Police Reports.
  • The New Jersey Open Public Records Act (N.J.S.A 47:1A-1) specifics which records are public records and which are confidential.

Additional Guidelines are found in NJ Court rules regarding court room discovery.

 

Police Reports that may NOT be available include;

1. Juvenile reports

2. Investigative details of Police Reports

3. Open or on going investigations

4. Reports pertaining to major crimes that are pending trial.

Police Report Discrepancies and Solutions

Questions pertaining to information within a Police report must be addressed directly to the Officer, or his/her supervisor, who investigated the incident. The Police report will contain a case number and the Officer’s name and badge number.

When the Police respond to the scene of an incident, they will commonly handle the call for service with one of the following dispositions;

1. Unfounded; The situation or problem could not be located or observed. Officers will commonly clear scenes of this nature with out a formal written report being filed.

2. Situation or problem rectified, and handled verbally. Officers will commonly clear scenes of this nature with out a formal written report being filed.

3. When a situation, problem, or incident, requires a Police Report, the Officer will request a Case Number. The incident becomes a case, and the Officer will document the event by creating a Police Report.

The Police Officer is the trained expert in the field and determines the appropriate actions needed to resolve issues with in our community.
