Promise House, located 191 Redmond St., is a 10-unit supportive needs housing project for homeless persons. Residents will be moving in at the end of February! It has been developed by Triple C, Inc, a local non-profit developer with funding assistance from the City of New Brunswick’s HOME program, NJHMFA’s Supportive Needs Housing Trust Fund, NB Housing Authority’s Housing Choice Vouchers and the Middlesex County Homeless Trust Fund.
New Brunswick is undertaking the development of bike lanes throughout the city. Bike lanes promote healthy living and add greater awareness to cyclist on the road. The lanes are a combination of shared lanes, also known as sharrows, and dedicated bike lanes. These lanes include a dedicated bike lane on Remsen Avenue and sharrows on Sandford Street and Commercial Avenue. Additionally, sharrows will be installed on a network of streets in the 6th Ward neighborhood and will extend into parts of the 5thWard. (Map)
The Fresh Grocer:
The Fresh Grocer is located across the street from the train station, in the new Wellness Center, at French St. & Kirkpatrick St and is New Brunswick’s first full-service supermarket! The store opened its doors in November 2012 and employs nearly 300 local residents through a community hiring initiative. The store is open 24/7 and offers a wide array of prepared foods, fresh produce, wine/beer, and much more. It’s across the street from the train station at French St. & Kirkpatrick St.
The Gateway Transit Village:
The Gateway is probably the most noticable addition to the New Brunswick landscape. It brings renewed life to an underutilized site in the city’s core with active sidewalks, new luxury residences, and a focus on diverse activities at the entrance to Rutgers campus. The project serves as a gateway to both downtown New Brunswick and the Rutgers main Campus. The project, includes mixed-use, ground floor retail, including Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, and the new Rutgers University Barnes & Noble partnered book store, as well as and The Vue, the tower’s residential section. The 23-story building features 42 penthouse condominiums and 150 rental units, 20% of which are designated as affordable housing. The Gateway promenade connection, creating an easier access point to the Westbound tracks from Rutgers’ College Ave campus, to the train platform is also now open.
The George, New Brunswick’s newest apartment building, is now leasing! It is located at George and New Street. The 14-story building will feature 104 living units, 20% of which will be designated affordable, along with ground floor retail space. The units look great and have some stunning views!
As part of a pedestrian safety initiative, the City completed the installation of flashing crosswalks on several intersections on Joyce Kilmer Ave., Commercial Ave., and Van Dyke Ave. in January.
