New Brunswick Free Public Library has been selected as one of 20 public libraries nationwide to
receive a $10,000 American Dream Literacy Initiative grant from the American Library
Association (ALA) and Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
With the funding, New Brunswick Free Public Library will provide a series of English for
Beginners classes in six-week cycles with classes at various times to meet the needs of
community members, as well as recruit and train community volunteers to serve as small group
leaders to support English language learning.
The English for Beginners class supports adults new to English in building communication skills
in contexts that are meaningful and relevant to their everyday lives. Class activities are
interactive and focus on skills and strategies related to vocabulary, listening, speaking and
pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammar.
The 18-hour volunteer training program includes:
• a 1-hour information session;
• a 2.5-hour training in preparation for classes;
• and attendance at 6 English for Beginners classes (approx. 2.5 hours each
Volunteers can choose what works best for their schedule from different options for each
segment of this training.
