July 4th Re-enactment

Several re-enactors, portraying members of the 2nd New Jersey Regiment, will perform the feu de joie (“fire of joy”) maneuver, which took place on July 4, 1778 on the banks of the Raritan River, in celebration of George Washington’s feu de joie military salute to the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence and the June 1778 American Army victory at the Battle of Monmouth. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 4, at Buccleuch Park. City Historian George Dawson will explain the significance of the occasion. Attendees should bring lawn chairs.
