Independence Day “Feu de Joie” Salute

Revolutionary War performers will re-enact George Washington’s Feu de Joie (“Fire of Joy”) salute in honor of Independence Day at Boyd Park on July 4th.

The original New Brunswick Feu de Joie on July 4, 1778 entailed a two-mile line of soldiers from Sonman’s Hill (now Douglass Campus at Rutgers University) to the White Farm (now Buccleuch Park) and a nearby artillery park. Washington ordered its performance in New Brunswick to celebrate the Army’s performance at the Monmouth County Courthouse (now Freehold) against a British attack and commemorate the second anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The program is free and open to the public. Spectators are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs for seating.
