New Lighted Crosswalks Installed on City Streets

Brand new lighted crosswalks have been installed in four spots in the City of New Brunswick as part of our ongoing improvements to Complete Streets and pedestrian safety.

Pedestrians may now use the lighted crosswalks in four intersections:

  • Lee Avenue and Comstock Street
  • Lee Avenue and Delavan Street
  • Remsen Avenue and Handy Street
  • Remsen Avenue and Ward Street

All four crossings are double sided with high-visibility flashing lights to alert drivers well before they reach the crossings. The four areas were chosen for new crosswalks to increase pedestrian safety and visibility at busy pedestrian crossing areas.

The two Lee Avenue crossings are in the vicinity of Livingston Elementary School, A. C. Redshaw Elementary School, Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple and St. Albans Episcopal Church; the crossing at Remsen Avenue and Ward Street is near St. Mary’s Apartments; and the Remsen Avenue and Handy Street crossing is located in a busy residential and business corridor, all placed to provide greater safety amenities to areas that are frequented by pedestrians.

The crossings were funded utilizing Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, furnished by the City’s Department of Planning, Community and Economic Development.

These new crosswalks continue the City’s dedication to its Complete Streets policy, accommodating all users of a street, including motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and persons with all abilities.
