The State of New Jersey recently enacted a new law that will provide up to 40 hours of paid sick time per year for the majority of workers in the State of New Jersey.
On or about October 29, 2018, this law will preempt the City of New Brunswick’s own Paid Sick and Safe Time ordinance, which has been in effect since January 6, 2016.
The new State law regarding paid sick time can be read by clicking the graphic below.
We advise all residents and employers to review it and familiarize themselves with the terms of this new law and how it may affect their own situations of employment.
Sick and safe time that has been accumulated under New Brunswick’s local ordinance is still considered earned. Under New Brunswick’s existing ordinance, employees will continue to accrue sick and safe time for their hours worked until the date upon which the new law goes into effect.
After that date, earned sick time will be accrued under the conditions of state law.
