Redesign plans for Feaster Park and Pittman Park are moving along with the unveiling of preliminary plans for brand-new looks at both of these community parks.
On October 30, the City of New Brunswick and its partners with the Trust for Public Land and Rutgers University Center for Urban Environmental Sustainability held the third meeting in a series of public sessions to discuss the layout of the parks and solicit ideas that community members would like to see implemented there.
Using feedback from these meetings, as well as surveys conducted through our school district, meetings with local stakeholders and outreach in the nearby neighborhoods, our representatives put together two preliminary layouts of what our redesigned parks might look like.
The designs for Feaster Park include such amenities as community gardens, playgrounds, a spray pad, playing fields and courts and an outdoor classroom space to complement the nearby Paul Robeson Community School for the Arts. Proposed designs for Pittman Park include new landscaping, plantings and new seating arrangements.
These layouts will serve as a way to best organize suggestions and feedback for the parks as we continue to plan. Input will continue to be collected as we further hone these proposals into a final plan of new and updated amenities and landscaping.
A final concept is expected to be unveiled to the community this coming January. An announcement for the meeting date will be posted on the City website and on social media.
The redesign of Feaster Park and Pittman Park are part of the City’s strategic plan to renew and re-energize its parks system, using our New Brunswick Parks Action Plan as a guide, created in partnership with experts at Rutgers University and the Trust for Public Land.
This effort began in 2016 with the comprehensive redesign of Recreation Park, and has continued with improvements scheduled into 2019, such as this past summer’s new fitness courts, spray pads, a new mural at Memorial Stadium and plans for a brand-new park on Welton Street.
