At 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 4 at Boyd Park, Revolutionary War performers will re-enact George Washington’s feu de joie (“fire of joy”).
The original New Brunswick feu de joie on July 4, 1778 entailed a two-mile line of soldiers from Sonman’s Hill (now Douglass Campus at Rutgers University) to the White Farm (now Buccleuch Park) and a nearby artillery park. Washington ordered its performance in New Brunswick to celebrate the Army’s performance at the Monmouth County Courthouse (now Freehold) against a British attack and commemorate the second anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The re-enactment is sponsored by the City of New Brunswick and the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield.
Admission is free. Spectators are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs for seating.
