The New Jersey Department of Transportation has begun a long-term project that will ultimately widen a portion of Route 18 heavily used by daily commuters.
This project aims to accomplish the following:
- Widen Route 18 north from Westons Mill Pond to the Route 1 South bridge. This includes the bridge over Route 1, which will see a third through lane added to it.
- Repair and replace parts of the Route 18 North and Route 18 South bridges over Route 1.
- Repair and replace parts of the Route 18 North bridge over the ramp connecting Route 1 South to Route 18 South.
- Improve drainage, lighting and signage in these areas.
The first part of the project will begin around Aug. 15. Work is expected to be done predominantly during off-peak hours, and will entail ramp and lane closures at different times throughout the process, as well as a shifting of the traffic pattern.
