A decommissioned firehouse on Remsen Avenue has been given new life following a redevelopment project that brought a community center to the neighborhood.
The Unity Square Community Center will host a myriad of programs, including crime watch meetings, ESL classes, financial counseling for home buyers and job training.
It will also house Corazon Kitchen, a social enterprise small business in partnership with Elijah’s Promise.
Unity Square is a New Brunswick-based community organizing and social justice group affiliated with Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen.
The center’s programs will be supported by a $900,000 grant from Johnson & Johnson, through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
On June 13, Unity Square, joined by representatives from the City of New Brunswick, Catholic Charities, the state Department of Community Affairs and Johnson & Johnson, cut the ribbon on the new center, officially opening it to the entire City.
