Nearly 100 racers zipped across the finish line this weekend during the 14th Annual New Jersey Soap Box Derby and Classic Car Show.
The derby is held annually in New Brunswick at the intersection of George Street and Johnson Drive. Racers between the ages of 7 to 17 race homemade soap box cars in the categories of Stock, Super Stock and Masters.
Stock champion Hannah Lehrian, Super Stock Champion Ryan Pierson, and Masters champion Jeffrey Clouser will all advance to the International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio on July 26.
This year, 26 children with special needs were able to participate in the new “Super Kids” division, racing in four brand-new Super Kids cars built by Johnson & Johnson.
The Super Kids cars were built for two, and each rider was partnered with a past soap box derby champion to help them guide the car down the track.
The derby was sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, Turtle & Hughes, AmeriHealth NJ, and the City of New Brunswick.
