New Brunswick, NJ, April 12, 2013 – The City of New Brunswick will conduct its annual Urban Cleanup Week from Saturday, April 13 to Saturday April 20, 2013.  During this week City residents and businesses are asked to take an extra effort in keeping their homes, stores and businesses clean and attractive.

“We should all strive to present our City in the best way possible, and Urban Cleanup Week is a yearly reminder to all of our citizens, businesses and organizations to take an active role in keeping our City clean,” said Donna Caputo, Clean Communities Coordinator for New Brunswick.

Each day of Urban Cleanup Week has a different theme emphasizing different ways to keep New Brunswick clean, these include:

Saturday, April 13

Large Volunteer Group Cleanup Day kicks off the week with large volunteer groups conducting litter cleanups at various locations throughout the City.
Sunday, April 14
Sweep-up Sunday
, where residents cleanup litter on their front lawns, sidewalks, curbs and two feet into the street.

Monday, April 15
Make Your Storefront Look Great
Businesses are asked to do their part by removing litter and cleaning up to two feet into the street, wash sidewalks, remove graffiti and clean windows.
Tuesday, April 16
Tidy-up Tuesday
Non-profits and Houses of Worships are asked to do a quick pickup of litter on their property.
Wednesday, April 17
It’s Earth Day at the Department of Public Works
Residents can drop-off paint, paint related items, TVs, and computers for recycling from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Residents can also receive 20 FREE biodegradable leaf bags per property and take FREE compost and mulch while supplies last.

Thursday, April 18
School Kids Sweep Up Day
Fifth Graders from select City schools will clean up litter at their school and in surrounding neighborhoods.  Students will be educated about litter and how their actions can help protect the environment.  Students will then participate in a Clean City Celebration and play in the Slam Dunk the Junk Basketball Tournament.
Friday, April 19
Flower Up Friday

The first 200 New Brunswick residents can pickup a FREE six-pack of annual flowers at Livingston Park Nursery near Livingston Avenue at 1036 How Lane from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Additional annual flowers can be purchased for 20 percent off for New Brunswick residents only.

Saturday, April 20

Large Volunteer Group Cleanup Day

The week will end as it began with large volunteer groups conducting litter cleanups at various locations throughout the City.

“With residents, businesses, students, volunteers, and municipal staff all working together New Brunswick will be a clean city for all of us to enjoy and a great way to celebrate Earth Day on Monday, April 22, 2013,” Caputo said.
